ELIMINATE THAT SLICE

Trying to correct the slice with new equipment will not work. New equipment is just more forgiving. Instead of having the ball go 40 yards to the right, it only goes 25 yards right with some of the new drivers on the market. The 15 yards difference may keep you out of the trees, but it still will not correct your golf game. If you do buy one of these new golf clubs, please check to see if it is legal. There are a lot of imitations out there that are not USGA approved.

To correct the slice, we have to make four simple adjustments. The first is to change your grip. Place the club in your hands as you always do. Now, rotate your hands on the grip to the right about 1/4 inch or so. The V’s between your finger and thumb, (on both hands), should be pointing to your right shoulder. If this does not work, turn your hands again about 1/4 inch. Do not make more than a ½ inch total adjustment.

The second adjustment is to stand up a bit straighter and closer to the ball. This will keep you from reaching out to make your swing.

The third adjustment is to use a closed stance. This is where your right foot is back of the line parallel to your target. You want to aim to the right of the target.

The forth adjustment is to correct the swing path in your back swing and down swing. This is more difficult because you can not see what you’re doing back there.

My recommendation is to practice by taking a half back swing and then come forward slowly. As you bring the club forward to make contact with the ball, tuck your right elbow into your right side and kind of slide your hips towards your target (shifting your weight). Reducing your hip turn will put more hand action into your swing. This will keep the club face going straight through contact.

It is very important to “accent” your follow through towards the target until it can’t go any further and then turn the club up and over your shoulder.

Please be patient. Correcting the slice is the most difficult task in golf and it will take time to overcome. Practicing on the driving range will be beneficial as you are under no peer pressure to play well and you can concentrate on the above.
